Resilience Research: What Thriving Leaders Do Differently

For two years, we conducted rigorous Ph.D. research inside two organizations to uncover what truly resilient leaders do—not just when things are going well, but also when they’re under stress.

The results were clear: those who maintain resilience, agility, and work-life balance don’t just cope—they thrive. They live with meaning, satisfaction, and sustained well-being while knowing how to transform stress into fuel for resilience.

What the Data Revealed
Our research identified key patterns among highly resilient people, including:

✔ Where they invest their time and energy—or, put another way, the “resilience muscles” they strengthen daily.
✔ How they align their lives with their core values, making intentional choices that sustain them over time.
✔ The coping strategies they rely on under stress—and how they reset before burnout hits.
✔ Why they tend to be happier and healthier, even in high-pressure environments.
✔ How they manage chronic illness and stress effectively, maintaining long-term well-being.
✔ The critical role of leadership and workplace culture in supporting resilience and retention.

Research has shown that staff who practice resiliency provide 14% better customer service, demonstrated 79% lower burnout, and felt 61% lower likelihood of leaving the organization than staff in more high stress and toxic environments.

Why This Matters for Organizations

Resilient people thrive—not just at work, but in life. They experience greater satisfaction, stronger health, and higher adaptability to change—without sacrificing what matters most.

Our practical, research-backed model helps individuals and organizations take immediate action to build resilience before burnout happens.

This is a leading indicator for:
✅ Workplace cultures that attract and retain top talent, reducing costly turnover.
✅ Workforce resilience, happiness, and well-being—essential for long-term engagement.
✅ Burnout prevention and stress management—ensuring teams remain high-performing.
✅ Workforce values and “great job” factors that drive job satisfaction.
✅ Adaptability to change and uncertainty, allowing teams to thrive in complexity.
✅ Sustainable business performance and productivity, built on a foundation of resilient leadership.

A New Approach to Measuring & Strengthening Resilience
Traditional workplace assessments--engagement surveys, wellness program evaluations, and organizational wellness metrics—are lagging indicators of business health. By the time they show a problem, it’s already too late.

Our quick, research-backed assessments give organizations real-time insights into stress levels, adaptability, and workforce resilience—enabling proactive leadership decisions before disengagement or burnout take hold.

The Three Critical Wins of Our Approach

1️⃣ Leaders gain trust and buy-in. Employees recognize that leadership genuinely cares about their well-being, increasing engagement.
2️⃣ Teams become more adaptable. With resilience-building skills in place, resistance to change decreases, leading to smoother transitions.
3️⃣ Organizations gain real-time agility. Leaders, teams, and businesses can measure stress and change readiness in real time, allowing for smarter, faster decision-making that drives success.
